Breast Self Examination (BSE)

Breast self examination is a method where the woman examines her own breasts every month in order to detect any unusual abnormality.  BSE is not a recommended screening tool on its own but it is useful when used in combination with breast imaging like mammogram and ultrasound and regular physical examinations by a doctor.

BSE is a free and convenient method that can be used regularly at any age and all women are recommended to perform the examination monthly as a way to familiarize their own breasts.

Performing BSE is like performing a breast massage. Using the pads of your fingers, gently press into the breast tissue in a circular motion. This encourages good blood and lymphatic circulation and body oxygenation.

When is the best time to perform BSE?

Menses time :             1 week after the last day of your menses
Post-menopausal :    Preferably same date every month

Method

Use the 3 finger pads to gently press into the breasts in vertical, circular or wedge pattern

Examine these areas around the breasts during BSE

  • All quadrants of breast from below the collar bone
  • Nipple
  • Axilla / Inner armpits
