Duct Ectasia

Duct ectasia is a benign breast change that occurs with increasing age. As women reaches menopause, the breast ducts behind the nipple becomes shorten and widen. Sometimes, fluid is produced and accumulates within the widened duct. There is no increased risk of developing breast cancer in duct ectasia.

Symptoms and Signs

  • Nipple discharge – watery or blood-stained
  • Breast pain
  • Lump behind the nipple
  • Inverted nipple

 

Diagnosis and Investigation

  • Breast Imaging – Mammogram and Ultrasound
  • Breast biopsy – FNAC / Core biopsy

 

Treatment

  • Many do not need any treatment or follow up if there are no signs suspicious of malignancy
  • Symptomatic treatment with analgesia if painful
  • For persistent discharge or suspicious lump, surgical removal of duct @ Microdochectomy is carried out
